Mrs. Blackwell eyed me and sighed. “You arrived so late last night, there was no time to properly prepare you, or to educate you about the ways of Hemford House…well, there’s nothing to be done about now. You’ll have to simply dive in and hope you can learn to swim. And what about your dress? It’s the same one you wore last night. It really ought to have been laundered after such a journey, Miss Glass.”

I was too embarrassed to tell her it was not only my best dress, but my only one. I had a couple of blouses and skirts packed, both of them also shabby. Money that would have been spent on my wardrobe went to my sisters, eager to find a husband, not to their old maid sister who’d repeatedly refused a match.

“I was told there would be a uniform.”

She pressed her fingertips to the bridge of her nose, closing her eyes briefly before fixing her gaze upon me once more. “I see.”

“Is there a problem?” I ventured

Her second sigh rose from the tips of her toes. “Mr. Hemford is the one who placed the advertisement for his wife’s companion, and I fear that his generosity was not sufficiently related to me.”

“So…there’s no uniform?”

“Not as yet, but if that’s what you were promised, then I shall arrange for it at once.” She looked me over, assessing, until warmth flooded my cheeks. “It may take a week or so for it to arrive, and there won’t be any tailoring, so you’ll have to give me your sizes. Until then, do you have something else you might wear that is less…worn?”

I kept myself from smoothing the front of my wrinkled dress only by curling my fingers in the skirt of it. “I have a plain blouse and skirt. Nothing like what you’re wearing, though.”

Mrs. Blackwell’s eyes widened slightly. “And why should I expect you to be dressed the same as I?”

“It’s the uniform of the house, isn’t it?”

Her lips pressed tightly and a small noise escaped her. She turned her face from mine, but I thought I glimpsed a sparkle in her gaze — was she trying not to laugh? Certainly when she returned her eyes to mine, I could see no sign of humor on her lovely but stern face.

“I do not wear a uniform, Miss Glass.”

She watched the darkness for a minute longer and saw only a few faint flashes through the trees. Her phone was charging on the nightstand, and she tapped the screen to check the time. Three-thirty. A warm shower was definitely in order. Maybe she’d even sneak downstairs and have a lemon bar and some milk.

A creak overhead froze her in place. Sarah held her breath, listening for another. There. A soft and sneaky noise above her, something like the pad of footsteps. It crossed the span of her room, and she went to the door to listen for it in the hallway. As she opened hers, she heard the click of another door closing. She couldn’t tell if it was Honor’s or Candace’s.

Ellie’s wail had Sarah lumbering down the hall.

“I’m coming!”

The little girl was still sobbing when Sarah got to her. She burrowed against her mother’s neck, crawling into her lap despite the lack of room. Sarah kissed Ellie’s temple, feeling for the heat of fever, but found none.

“What happened, ketzeleh?”

“Daddy,” Ellie whispered.

Sarah’s arms tightened around her. “You miss Daddy?”

“Daddy was here.”

A chill tickled the back of Sarah’s neck, like the gust of a breeze through an open window. “You must have been having a dream.”

“No. Daddy was here,” Ellie insisted. She struggled out of Sarah’s embrace, squirming to turn toward the closet. “He stood there.”
