Dear e-book thief.

You know that dog crap that ruins your favorite pair of shoes? That’s you.

And because she said it so well, go read what my buddy thinks about you, here.

If you download books from the internet without paying for them, you are stealing. And that makes you a thief. And therefore, you suck. And I don’t care if you don’t like to hear it; frankly, I hope you stop reading my books. Because if you’re stealing them by downloading them from peer-to-peer or file sharing sites, you’re not a fan. You’re not a “reader.” You’re the dog crap ruining my shoes. I don’t write for you.

I’ll echo what Lauren said: I won’t apologize for wanting to be paid for my work. I pay other people all the time for the work they do or the services they provide. I don’t go to the store and stick a book in my purse and walk out without paying for it just because I want it and don’t have the money for it.

It’s called theft, and if you’re doing it, you suck.

I’ve been seeing more and more about this recently. I don’t know what bugs me more about it, the fact that people do it at all, or the people who say “what’s the harm.” Oh wait, I know what bugs me the most about this, writers who have the attitude that it’s okay because at least they are getting new “fans” out of the theft. I went round and round with two people about this on another board. They figured it was publicity and perhaps the idiot thief would actually like the book enough to either a) purchase a physical copy or b) pay for the next book. These are the kind of conversations that end with me hitting my head on the desk.

Oh and for as much as I’d love to read what Lauren Dane wrote in her LiveJournal, I can’t see to get passed the “adult content” warning.

LOL! I guess you have to be an LJ member to get past. Sorry!

Essentially she said book thieves suck.

Ah, but me smart monkey, I added Lauren’s blog to my Bloglines and ta-da! there it was and I agree with everything she (and you) said.

I also just saw a newsletter RWA put out about this kind of theft and they listed some of the offending sites, encouraging the membership to check for themselves and see if they have books there.

    Dear Megan,

Speaking of e-book, would you give a brief synopsis on Reason Enough ?
